About Winthrop University

Winthrop University is an American public, four-year liberal arts college in Rock Hill, which is the largest city in York County and the 4th largest in the US state of South Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of more than 67 000 inhabitants, fact which also makes it the 3rd largest city of the Charlotte metropolitan area behind Gastonia, NC and Charlotte.

 

Winthrop University was established in 1886, and it is South Carolina's top-rated university according to evaluations conducted by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, also being named by the John Templeton Foundation as a University that "encourages character development". Overall, Winthrop offers its students 41 undergraduate and 24 graduate degrees, the undergraduate degrees being granted through 4 colleges: The College of Business, College of Arts & Sciences, The Richard W. Riley College of Education and the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

 

The graduate programs are offered through the University's Office of Graduate Studies, all post-graduate degrees being offered on the Master's level. The graduate degrees are offered in many areas of study, including in Liberal Arts, Biology, Human Nutrition and School Psychology, Social Work, Business Administration, Education and Art and Design.

 

Athletics

Winthrop's athletic teams are known as the Eagles, who compete in 15 sports, for men and women, in NCAA Divison I, in the Big South Conference, including in basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, cross country and volleyball. The Eagles have experienced success, many times, in the recent years, winning numerous Big South Conference championships in the following sports: baseball (3), men's basketball (9), men's cross country (2), men's soccer (2), men's tennis (4), women's tennis (10), softball (3), and women's volleyball (4).
